Dr Soumen Ghosal (born in 1966) did his schooling from Bolpur High School, Bolpur, West Bengal, B. Sc (Ag) Hons. (1988) from Palli Siksha Bhavana, VISVA BHARATI, Sriniketan and M.Sc (Ag) & Ph.D (Agronomy) from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi.

He joined ICAR in 1993 through Agriculture Research Services (ARS 1991) and subsequently at IINRG (erstwhile ILRI) in 1995. He had spent 8 years in Regional Field Research Station, Purulia (1998-2007)as local as well as over all in-charge of the station from time to time. Presently, he is working in the capacity of Principal Scientist in Lac Production Division. During his 20 years of experience in research and extension, he has 48 publications in his credit.

He has played a significant role in screening, evaluation and popularization of bushy lac host Flemingia semialata. Identified several agronomic factors (application of lime, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, canopy structure, direction etc.) responsible for sustained plant growth and/or increased lac yield on different hosts and popularized in farmers' field. Dr S. Ghosal is life member in a number of Societies e.g. Indian Society of Weed Sciences, Indian Science Congress Association, Society for Advancement of NaturalResins and Gums etc. Besides, he is founder member of Asian Agri-History Society and recipient of R.S. Paroda medal-2009 for contribution on quality broodlac production by BIOVED RESEARCH SOCIETY, Allahabad.
