pesticides and sprayer or any other equipment requires considerable investment. Host
plants, broodlac and labour are the major inputs required for beginning of cultivation
to marketing of lac. It provides employment opportunities especially to rural women
as many of the operations may be carried out rather efficiently by them. A complete
supply chain management is required for smoothening the lac marketing practices.
Traditionally, rural business is associated with agriculture and allied activities. Of late,
however, the trickledown effect of economic growth, renewed focus on infrastructure
development and employment generation in rural areas have led to huge investment
by the government in rural India, with a view to bridge the urban and rural divide
and also to make agriculture a commercial proposition. With a collective effort of
government and the people, financial institutions including banks may set forth
to continue growth in the rural and agri development and become the ‘Banker to
Every Lac Grower’. Thus, boosting the sector with financial, technical and market
intervention may be helpful to mitigate the migration problem in tribal areas and
minimize the pressure of population in urban areas. Financial institution may come
forward to support the poorest of poor. Individual farmers who are members of the
cooperative societies or SHGs may be priority target group.
