About the Institute
ICAR- Indian Institute of Natural Resins and
Gums, formerly Indian Lac Research Institute,
located at Ranchi, Jharkhand, is a unit of Indian
Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) dedicated
to the research and training on natural resins
and gums. ICAR is an autonomous body under
Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare,
Government of India, and the apex organization
for the agricultural research in India. ICAR-IINRG, ICAR-IINRG, Ranchi
established in 1924, is thus, one of the oldest institutions within the ICAR system, having
completed 94 years of fruitful services to the Nation. The Indian Lac Research Institute which
was exclusively working on lac resin was renamed as Indian Institute of Natural Resins and
Gums, in 2007 to expand the mandate for inclusion of all natural resins and gums.
About the Network Project on Harvesting, Processing and Value Addition
of Natural Resins and Gums
In order to coordinate research activities pertaining to value addition and post-harvest
processing of natural resins, gums and gum-resins in different parts of the country, an
outreach programme in a Network mode was sanctioned during XI Plan with IINRG,

Ranchi as lead centre. At present the project is dealing with harvesting/tapping, processing
and value addition of Guar Gum, Karaya Gum and Gum Arabic, Pine resin (Pinus roxhburgii
and P. kesiya), Tamarind seed gum, black dammar, white dammar, Guggul gum-resin and
other minor gums and resins with nine other Network co-operating centres.
Objectives
v To study production, processing,
marketing and utilization of region
specific NRGs
v To develop and standardize protocols
for harvesting and collection
v To improve/ refine the primary
processing techniques for enhanced
recovery and quality
v To improve the process and machinery
for making value added products
v To transfer the resin, gum and gum-
resin specific technologies in the Network centres in India
region
