The lollowing internationally accepled definitions in genetic resource
documentation have been adopted lor developing descriptors lor lac
           insects:
Passport descriptors : These provide the basic inlormation used for
general management of the accession (including the registration
at the gene-bank and other identification in{ormation) and describe
parameters that should be observed when the accession is originally
                collected.
l\4anagemenl descriplors : These provide the basis lor management
ol lhe accessions in the gene-bank and assist with their multiplication
                and regeneration.
Environment and site descriptors : These describe the environmental
and site-specilic parameters lhal are important when characterization
and evaluation trials are held. Theycan be important lorthe interpletation
ol lhe results ol those trials. Site descriptors lor germplasm collecling
                are also included here,
Characlerization descriptors :These enable an easy and quick
discrimination between phenolypes and / or lheir products. They are
generally highly heritable, can be easily seen by the eye and are
equally expressed in all environments. ln addition, these may include
a limited number ol traits thought desirable by a consensus ol users
of the particular crop, e.g. phenotypic variations being meager and
microscopic in lac insects, molecular and cytological markers are
                included under this category
Evaluation descriplors : Many o{ the descfiptors in this category are
                suscepliblelo environmentalditterencesbutare generallyuse{ul in crop
improvemenl and others may involve c0mplex biochemicalor molecular
characterization. They include yield, agronomic performance, stress
                susceptibilities and biochemical traits.
Characterization will normally be responsibilily ol gene-bank curators,
while evaluation will typically be carried oul elsewhere (possibly by a
mullidisciplinary team ol scientists). The evaluation data should be led
back to the gene-bank which will maintain a data lile.
